Introduction:

I am Sumera Sulaiman S. I have completed my Bachelor’s in Civil Engineering in 2020. Being a Covid breakout Graduate it was really difficult to land a job during that phase so I decided to continue my studies further to take up Government job opportunities. Along with my online classes, I was looking for an opportunity to gain industry working experience and that’s when I found Abhyaz on LinkedIn.

My experience in brief:

I am glad that I didn’t miss taking up this opportunity as it provided me a real-time work experience from the comfort of my home. Even though it was difficult initially to understand the whole process, with the help of my mentors I was able to blend in well. During the internship, I was not only able to learn a new software tool related to my field but also, got the opportunity to assist as an Intern lead for Engineering team. It was exciting to learn something new in terms of Management & Operations apart from my skill upgradation. It made me more confident in terms of upskilling my soft skills as well as developed me into a tech-savvy individual.

Projects:

I had the opportunity to work on 2 projects during my 1-month internship in which I have taken two core civil engineering topics and integrated its application with GIS. I also had the opportunity to attend different KT sessions related to Intern Lead tasks and was lucky enough to perform the assigned tasks after a certain amount of practice to the best of my ability.

Internship Projects:

1.  Environmental Engineering and It’s Application in GIS & Remote Sensing

In this project, I have explained in brief about environmental engineering, the benefits of GIS, major uses of GIS in the field of environmental engineering and the working of SAGA GIS Software by showcasing How to explore the basic elevation data visualization and Terrain Analysis in a short interactive skill capture video.

The Final Output Of Basic Terrain Analysis Using SAGA GIS Software

2. Transportation Engineering and It’s Application in GIS & Remote Sensing

In this project, I have given a basic introduction to transportation engineering and the applications of GIS in this field. I have also provided a short tutorial on how to Plan routes using QGIS software as a part of this project.

Intern Lead Tasks:

1. Onboarding Of Interns

Every week on Monday, I guided new interns and helped them understand the basic aspects of this internship.

2. Monitoring Intern’s Status & Performance

As an Assistant Intern Lead, I kept track of every intern’s needs, reviewed their course outcomes before final submission and assisted them whenever they needed any help related to the internship process.

3. Interns Outcome Course Creation:

Before every exit session on Thursday, I helped in converting every relieving intern’s verified outcome into courses and assisted them with their exit formalities process.

4. Management of Abhyaz and CNCTrain Portal:

With the guidance from my mentors, I was able to learn the basic portal management related to various courses, setting up of attendance, course development, generating course reports and completion of peer to peer grading every week.

Tools used throughout my internship duration:

SAGA, QGIS, Moodle, GitHub, and Zoho One & Workdrive

Perks of this internship:

I got to learn a lot of new information about how virtual office, moodle and zoho platform works. It boosted my self-confidence. My most valuable learnings are remote teamwork, time management, communication & presentation skills.

Thanks to Mentors and Colleagues:

Before concluding this blog, I would like to thank my mentors Jayanthi Ma’am, Harsha Ma’am and everyone for their support throughout the internship. I would also like to thank all my colleagues for being a very supportive and encouraging team.

Thank you.
